Contemporary painting in the collection – 54 works by artists working today: from 18 000 to 1 100 000 ₽; from 20 000 to 70 000 $ (some works are priced in US dollars). These are paintings made now or in recent decades, as opposed to the historical painting in other sections of the catalogue.

The selection centres on the Russian contemporary scene, especially Rostov: Mikhail Shemyakin, Konstantin Batynkov, Alexander Chursin, Oleg Ustinov, the SITO group, Irina Grabkova – with international contemporaries such as the Italian hyperrealist Valerio Carrubba.

Buying a contemporary painting differs in that the artist is usually alive and still working: the work has a clear context and sometimes a direct link to its maker. Each lists artist, year, technique and size, with the price on the card.

Questions and answers

What counts as contemporary painting?

Works by artists active today or in recent decades. Historical painting is not included here – other catalogue sections cover it.

What do contemporary paintings cost?

The range is from 18 000 to 1 100 000 ₽; from 20 000 to 70 000 $ (some works are priced in US dollars), depending on the artist, size and the work’s place in their output.

Whose work is represented?

Mainly the Russian contemporary scene, with a strong Rostov line, plus international contemporaries.

How does buying a contemporary work differ from a historical one?

The artist is usually alive and working, so the context is clear and the provenance is typically shorter and more transparent.

How is authenticity confirmed?

We give artist, technique and provenance, with an expert report where one exists; attribution is usually simpler than for historical works.
