"Azovstal" is an industrial landscape showing the metallurgical works on the shores of the Sea of Azov – a subject characteristic of Soviet thematic painting of the 1960s and its attention to imagery of large-scale industry. The oil is by the Rostov painter Viktor Grigoryevich Len (1914–1978), an Honored Artist of the RSFSR who trained at the Rostov Art School and at the Surikov State Art Institute in Moscow under Aristarkh Lentulov and Sergei Gerasimov. Here the industrial motif is combined with a landscape sensibility, reflecting the artist's engagement with the life of the industrial South.
