This watercolour depicts a working scene at the Rostov river port on the Don: loading operations at the quay are rendered in a translucent technique built on tonal relationships. The motif of port labour is characteristic of Soviet genre painting and graphic art of the late 1950s. The sheet belongs to the early period of Alexander Kurilovich – a Rostov painter and graphic artist, a graduate of the Rostov Art School and the Kharkiv Art Institute, who later took part in and edited the 'Agitplakat Dona' workshop.
