Eight numbered bronze figures from the cycle Carnivals of St Petersburg, dated 1995, each measuring 21.5 cm. The lot is sold only as a set of at least two figures, and the price follows the number chosen.

The Don Auction House holds the cycle Carnivals of St Petersburg as a set of eight bronze figures dated 1995. Each measures 21.5 cm: cabinet-scale sculpture made to be looked at closely. The figures carry the artist's numbers N1–N6, N9 and N10 (N7 and N8 are not part of the set), and each is numbered within an edition of up to one hundred casts, for example 21/100, 40/100, 65/100. The lot description speaks of jesters, masks and the carnival of the city. The set is not broken up: the minimum purchase is two figures, and single figures are not sold.

The price follows the number of figures in the set. The lot page carries a tariff table for sets of two to eight figures, giving both the total for the set and the price per figure. In a larger set the price per figure is lower than when two are bought. The current amounts are shown in that table.

The carnival theme occupied Shemyakin for many years. By his own account it grew out of the festivities of Peter the Great's court – the jesting processions and the masquerades; among his sources he also named the commedia dell'arte with its Harlequin and Pulcinella, the Russian lubok print, Petrushka, the freaks of Peter's Kunstkamera and grotesque masks from various cultures. Dmitry Likhachev wrote about the same period in his essay "Mikhail Shemyakin and the Petersburg of Peter the Great", describing how Peter I raised the popular laughter culture of old Russia to the level of the state, with its assemblies and its jesters' council. Easel works from the series were shown in the exhibition "Mikhail Shemyakin. The Artist and the Theatre" at the St Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music in 2017.

The bronzes of the cycle are edition sculpture with the artist's numbering, that is, original casts rather than printed reproductions. The shop of the Mikhail Shemyakin Foundation states that the artist's small-form bronze sculpture is produced in the United States in a limited edition. Other works by Shemyakin in the collection are gathered on the artist's page and in the selection devoted to this cycle, sculpture in the Sculpture section, the remaining lots in the general catalogue; the Auctions section explains how the online sales run. The collection holds 12 works by Mikhail Shemyakin in total; price range: from 30 000 to 3 901 000 ₽; from 15 000 to 22 000 $ (some works are priced in US dollars). To discuss the composition of a set, leave a request on the lot page: a specialist of the Don Auction House in Rostov-on-Don will reply about availability, payment and the handover of the works.
