This small sculpture in gilt cast silver depicts one of the rat characters from Shemyakin's production of the ballet "The Nutcracker" at the Mariinsky Theatre (premiered 2001), in which Hoffmann's mice appear as rats. The rat pup with sausages comes from the kitchen scene; the artist issued these characters as small-scale sculpture in limited editions and in various materials.
