Carnival of Saint Petersburg

Year:1991

2 700 $

Technique: Paper, ink.
Size: 28 × 35 cm.

An original ink drawing whose title points directly to one of the artist's principal cycles, "Carnivals of St. Petersburg." That series revives the Russian carnival tradition – from the skomorokhi to the mock processions of Peter the Great – blending commedia dell'arte masks and the Russian lubok. The sheet belongs to this body of Shemyakin's work.
