The sheet centres on Mstislav Rostropovich – the eminent cellist and conductor forced to leave the USSR in 1974 – and his wife, the soprano Galina Vishnevskaya. It belongs to Shemyakin's gallery of figures of the Russian emigration of the late 1970s. The grotesque, philosophical treatment is characteristic of the artist's graphic work of these years.
