From 1941 Burliuk lived in Hampton Bays on Long Island, where he led a colony of émigré artists and painted the local scenery extensively – its bays, rivers, fishing boats and small wooden houses. Summer Landscape with a River belongs to this circle of motifs: watercolor with charcoal renders the island's views in a soft, Post-Impressionist key far removed from his early Cubo-Futurism. Works of these years form the "Long Island" body of work characteristic of the late Burliuk, shaped within the art colony he founded.
