"Landscape with a Waterfall" belongs to the Romantic landscape tradition of the Antwerp School associated with Jacob Jacobs, a Belgian landscape and marine painter trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Gustaf Wappers and Ferdinand de Braekeleer. The motif of falling water among rocks and foliage is rendered in the subdued tonal range of mid-nineteenth-century Romantic oil painting. In Jacobs's work, landscape stood alongside marine scenes, with study material gathered during his travels across the North Sea, the Netherlands and the Mediterranean.
