A work from the series “Russian,” a large project by Oleg Kulik devoted to the imagery of national culture and conceived as a dedication to Leo Tolstoy. Across the cycle the artist assembles recognizable symbols of Russian life and culture, translating black-and-white photography into silkscreen with added gilding and the colors of the national flag. The series belongs to the reflective, photographic period of Kulik’s career that followed the radical “Man-Dog” actions which made him one of the key figures of Moscow actionism.
