About the artist

A Spanish painter, printmaker, sculptor and writer – the most recognizable figure of Surrealism. Born in Figueres (Catalonia), he studied at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid. In the late 1920s he joined the Paris Surrealists and developed his “paranoiac-critical method”, deliberately drawing delirium and hallucination into painting. His images – melting clocks, long-legged elephants, the uneasy landscapes of the Empordà – have long entered popular culture. He worked extensively in prints, illustrating Dante, the Bible and “Don Quixote”, so his editions are widely represented on the market. He died in Figueres, where in his lifetime he opened his own Theatre-Museum. The foundation’s catalogue holds six works.
