“The Vision of the Angel” (The Finger of God). This work is devoted to the unity of God and man. The image of the Creator is represented by the thumb of the right hand, from which all that exists emerges. Man is created by God, in His image, and therefore strives to become like the Creator; but God is omnipotent, and man can never surpass Him, whatever knowledge he acquires. The tree-like human figure, its branches reaching to the heavens and its roots firmly bound to the earth, reflects the dual nature of man. The figure of the angel to the side mournfully contemplates the duality of human nature and the vanity of human aspirations, emphasized by the crutch behind the angel’s back.
