"The Well" is a work by the German painter Max Martini (1867–1920), a representative of the Weimar School of Painting, where he trained under Max Thedy and Leopold von Kalckreuth. The rural motif of a well belongs to the landscape and genre subjects that the artist drew from the environs of Weimar and Thuringia. Executed in gouache over a graphite-pencil underdrawing on cardboard, it reflects his practice as a draughtsman and painter of studies from nature.
