The first known examples of Chinese erotic art are more than two thousand years old. These are paintings on porcelain wares, porcelain figurines, inlaid boxes, pictures on silk or rice paper. Pictures and drawings were made on the pretext of providing instruction for shy or inexperienced young people. Such items were given especially often as wedding presents. On them one can find gift inscriptions: “Offering you this box as a gift, I wish everyone to be happy and to live in joy” or “Husband and wife lovingly bless the precious son to create a happy family”. Erotic themes in the painting, engravings and porcelain of China are most often connected with Taoism and the belief in the balance of Yin and Yang. P24/253-1/11 China, Qing dynasty period, 1889–1912
