Porcelain, painting, 33.5 x 10.5 cm Pavel Mikhailovich Kozhin (1904–1975) – born in the village of Bykovka, Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. After the October Revolution he moved to Moscow. In 1926 Pavel Kozhin entered the Leningrad Higher Art and Technical Institute (VKhUTEIN), where his subsequent creative path as a ceramic artist was determined. During his studies he did practical training at the Dulyovo Porcelain Factory. After graduating from VKhUTEIN in 1931, Kozhin worked for a year at the Dmitrov Porcelain Factory. The small vase “The Chase” (1932) belongs to the works of this period. In 1933–1935 he worked under contracts for the Konakovo Faience Factory and the Dulyovo and Dmitrov Porcelain Factories. From 1936 to 1937 he was on the staff of the Konakovo Faience Factory, where, in particular, he created a number of works for the 1937 Paris World Exhibition. In 1938 Kozhin was appointed leading sculptor of the Dulyovo Porcelain Factory. Having joined the Dulyovo Porcelain Factory in 1938, Kozhin continued to work on animalier sculpture, but alongside this he not infrequently turned to other kinds of small-scale sculpture as well. He made interesting genre figurines for porcelain (“Woodcutter”, 1939; “Sausage Seller”, 1939; “Militiaman”, 1939) and tried his hand at the satirical genre (“The Priest and Balda”). Sculptor P. M. Kozhin. USSR, Dulyovo, 1952–56
