Gopak Dance

Author:Polonsky ZKhK, USSR
Factory:Polonne
Year:1970–1990
15 $
Technique: Porcelain, painting.
Size: 6 × 3 × 6 cm.
A small porcelain figure from the Polonne Factory of Artistic Ceramics (Ukrainian SSR), hand-painted and gilded, depicting the hopachok, a Ukrainian folk dance akin to the hopak. The piece conveys the swift movement and characteristic verve of the dance. Established in 1956 on the basis of the "Keramik" artel, the factory became known precisely for its small-scale figural porcelain, which flourished in the 1950s–1970s; dance and genre subjects formed a substantial part of its output.
