Birch trees – a motif traditional to the Russian landscape – are treated by Bukh in his late Expressionist key. Painted in oil on hardboard, the work is built from large masses of colour and a dense, hand-applied texture, without brushes. The landscape interests the artist above all as an occasion for open, saturated colour.
