David Davidovich Burliuk (1882–1967) was a painter, poet and publisher known during his own lifetime as the father of Russian Futurism. The collection of the Don Auction House holds 3 works. David Davidovich Burliuk was born on 21 July 1882 in Kharkov province and died on 15 January 1967 in Southampton, New York, on Long Island. He studied at the art schools of Kazan and Odessa, at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich, in Anton Ažbè's private school, in Fernand Cormon's studio in Paris, and from 1911 at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, from which he was expelled in 1914. In 1910 Burliuk became one of the founders of the literary and artistic group Hylaea; he was among the organisers of the Jack of Diamonds society, and he took part in the circle of the Munich Blaue Reiter. His signature stands under the manifesto "A Slap in the Face of Public Taste", published in Moscow on 18 December 1912 together with the anthology of the same name, in which Vladimir Mayakovsky made his poetic debut; Mayakovsky called Burliuk his teacher.
In 1918–1919 Burliuk toured Siberia and the Russian Far East, lived in Vladivostok in 1919–1920, and in 1920 left for Japan, where he spent about two years. In the autumn of 1922 he settled in the United States. From 1922 to 1941 he lived in New York City, worked from 1923 to 1940 as art editor of the newspaper Russky Golos, and from 1930 published his own illustrated journal Color and Rhyme. In 1941 he moved to Hampton Bays on Long Island and remained there for the rest of his life; the circle of artists that formed around him is usually said to have included Nicolai Cikovsky, the Soyer brothers, Milton Avery, John Graham and Arshile Gorky. He returned to the USSR twice, in 1956 and 1965.
