The skull – a traditional vanitas motif, a reminder of mortality – is here rendered in the material characteristic of Anzelm: coal bound with resin. In the artist's practice coal is tied to the theme of industrial memory and "heavy" materiality, so a familiar symbol takes on a dense, almost geological physicality. The three-dimensional object continues the line in which cultural images are embodied in industrial matter.
