Les Grands Boulevards presents the Parisian streetscape that Serge Fotinsky knew as a longtime resident of Montparnasse and a participant in the Paris salons. Having come from Odessa and settled in Paris at the end of the 1900s, he belonged to the interwar School of Paris, his manner shaped by Fauvism and the Cézannian tradition. Executed in gouache – a medium of dense yet fluid colour – the sheet conveys the atmosphere of the city's great thoroughfares. The work belongs to the landscape line of an artist who united French painterly culture with a Russian foundation.
