A view of Staraya Ladoga, one of the oldest settlements of early Rus, on the Volkhov river with its fortress and churches. The banks of the Volkhov long attracted landscape painters, and in the 1960s–1980s the environs of Staraya Ladoga were a well-known plein-air site, notably for artists of the Leningrad school. Worked in gouache on cardboard, the sheet belongs to the artist's Volkhov landscapes of the early 1980s.
