A forest landscape with pines, oil on canvas mounted on cardboard. The work belongs to the landscape line of Meer Mikhailovich Gokhshtein (1871/72–1942), a painter who received an academic training at the Drawing School in Odessa and at the Imperial Academy of Arts and worked thereafter chiefly as a landscapist in Leningrad. The dense wall of coniferous forest is handled in the tradition of the Russian realist school, with attention to the state of nature and to the atmosphere of light and air. A substantial part of the artist's legacy consists of views of places associated with Pushkin – Mikhailovskoye, Trigorskoye, the Pushkin Hills – and the motif of a pine wood stands close to that circle of his work.
