"The Beginning of Spring" is a small landscape study in oil on cardboard. Its intimate format and support are typical of work done from life: Nalbandyan painted such studies en plein air, seeking to convey the colour richness of nature in natural light. Known above all for his ceremonial portraits of state leaders and as one of the leading masters of official Soviet art, he pursued in parallel a line of lyrical landscape – views of Armenia, the Caucasus, the Crimea and the Moscow countryside – in which his free, lively brushwork comes to the fore. This early-spring motif belongs to that quieter, landscape side of his art.
