An estampe is an impression pulled from a printing surface the artist prepared themselves. It is not a copy of an existing painting but a work in its own right: the image is made for the stone, block or plate, and the sheet pulled from it counts as an original. This is what separates it from a reproduction or poster printed from a photograph of someone else’s work.

The edition is limited and usually written on the sheet as a fraction – 56/250 means the fifty-sixth impression of two hundred and fifty – with the artist’s pencil signature alongside. E.A. or A.P. marks an artist’s proof outside the main edition.

The collection holds 53 works. The principal technique is lithography, alongside serigraphy, silkscreen and etching with drypoint, and sheets on Arches – the French cotton paper traditionally chosen for fine printing. The price range is from 30 000 to 500 000 ₽.

Questions and answers

What is an estampe, and how does it differ from a reproduction?

An impression pulled from a printing surface the artist made for that purpose. It counts as an original. A reproduction is printed from a photograph of a finished work and does not.

What does 56/250 on a sheet mean?

The impression number and the edition size: the fifty-sixth of two hundred and fifty. Smaller editions generally carry more value.

What do prints in the collection cost?

The range is from 30 000 to 500 000 ₽, depending on the artist, edition size, condition and signature.

What is in the section?

53 works, mostly lithographs, with serigraphy, silkscreen and drypoint etching.

How is authenticity supported?

We give provenance, technique, edition size and whether the sheet is signed, with an expert report where one exists.
