About the artist

A sculptor and graphic artist, a symbol of the confrontation between the artist and power. A front-line soldier gravely wounded in 1945, after the war he studied at the Surikov Institute. He became famous for his public clash with Nikita Khrushchev at the Manege exhibition (1962), after which he fell into disgrace; paradoxically, it was he whom the family commissioned to make Khrushchev’s gravestone. In 1976 he emigrated and worked in the USA. His sculpture consists of powerful, torn, “tree-like” bodies; the central project of his life was the “Tree of Life”. He created the “Mask of Sorrow” memorial in Magadan. The foundation’s catalogue holds three works.
