"Village Landscape" belongs to the tradition of Russian realist landscape painting of the turn of the twentieth century, to which Nikolai Dmitrievich Blagoveshchensky (1868 – after 1917) belonged. Academically trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied in the studio of N. D. Kuznetsov and in 1894 received the title of certified artist, he worked in both easel and monumental painting and took part in the exhibitions of the St. Petersburg Society of Artists. This small-format canvas treats a rural motif with the restrained painterly means characteristic of the Russian school of the period.
