"Vegetables" is a still life by Grigory Aleksandrovich Sretensky (1899–1973), executed in oil in the tradition of the Moscow school of painting. A pupil of Pyotr Konchalovsky, Ilya Mashkov and Pyotr Kuznetsov at VKhUTEMAS–VKhUTEIN and a co-founder of the "Bytie" ("Being") association, Sretensky belonged to the circle of artists who continued the painterly line of the Jack of Diamonds (Bubnovy Valet), with its dense, saturated colour and attention to the world of objects. Still life was the artist's favourite genre, and here the vegetables serve as a pretext for resonant, materially tangible painting. The work dates from the post-war period of the artist's career.
