"Obnazhenka" (Nude) is a study of the nude figure executed in watercolour on paper. The work is by Alexander Mikhailovich Chernykh (1895–1964), a Rostov-based painter and teacher who trained at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Konstantin Korovin, Nikolai Kasatkin and Abram Arkhipov, and was among the founders of the Rostov branch of the Union of Artists. Built on soft watercolour washes and assured draughtsmanship, the sheet reflects the academic tradition of working from life. The turn to the nude corresponds to the enduring practice of studying the human body – a tradition to which Chernykh was connected as a teacher at the Grekov Rostov Art School.
