Lithographs

Lithography is a planographic printing technique: the image is drawn on stone or plate and printed onto paper, each impression pulled by hand within a limited edition. These are original prints, not reproductions: sheets are usually signed and numbered by the artist. Details of technique and edition are given on each work's page.

Lithography is a planographic technique invented in 1798 by Alois Senefelder. The artist draws with greasy crayon or ink directly onto smooth limestone – later a metal plate – which is then treated so that ink adheres only to the greasy marks. Each impression is pulled by hand on a press.

The consequence is that the drawing remains the artist’s own: the line on the stone keeps the pressure and gesture of the hand. Colour lithographs are printed from several stones, one per colour, and registering them precisely is a craft in itself.

This selection holds 34 works, usually signed and numbered, with the edition stated on the sheet. The price range is from 30 000 to 500 000 ₽.

Questions and answers

How does a lithograph differ from a digital print?

A lithograph is pulled from a stone or plate the artist drew on by hand. A digital print reproduces a finished image from a file and is not original graphic art.

Is a lithograph an original or a copy?

An original. The printing surface is made by the artist for printing, and sheets pulled within the authorised edition are works in their own right.

What does a lithograph cost?

In this selection, from 30 000 to 500 000 ₽, depending on artist, edition size, condition and signature.

How do I know the edition is authorised?

The sheet carries a pencil signature and a fraction giving the impression number.

What is in the selection?

34 works, with technique and edition given on each work’s page.
