About the artist

A painter and graphic artist, one of the most poetic masters of the 20th century. Born in Vitebsk into a poor Jewish family, he studied under Yehuda Pen and Léon Bakst and worked in Paris in the 1910s. His language – flying lovers, fiddlers, goats and the roofs of the shtetl – fused Vitebsk memory, Hasidic imagery and the experience of the avant-garde. After the revolution he headed the art school in Vitebsk, then emigrated, living in France and the USA. He worked extensively in stained glass, theatre and especially lithography, so his prints are widely collected. He died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The foundation’s catalogue holds three works.
