About the artist

A painter, People’s Artist of the USSR, one of the principal masters of official Soviet art. Born in Tiflis, he studied at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. He became famous for his ceremonial portraits of Stalin and subsequent heads of state, earning the nickname “the first brush of the Politburo”. Yet he was a solid painter of the school and left many landscapes, still lifes and studies showing a free, lively touch. A laureate of Stalin Prizes and a full member of the Academy of Arts. The foundation’s catalogue holds one work.
