About the artist

A painter and graphic artist, one of the most tragic figures of unofficial art. In 1946 he was arrested on a false charge and spent eight years in the camps – it was there that he began to draw systematically. The camp experience defined his entire imagery: ghostly, finely rendered phantasmagorias in which fragile figures exist in a shimmering, unreal space. His manner brings him close at once to the Northern Renaissance and to Surrealism. One of the most important authors of “other art”. The foundation’s catalogue holds one work.
