The work is a copy of one of the best-known paintings in Russian landscape art – Alexei Kondratyevich Savrasov's The Rooks Have Come Back (1871), held in the State Tretyakov Gallery. Its composition centres on an early-spring motif: rooks building nests in bare birches beside a village church, with melting snow and a high, overcast sky. First shown at the inaugural exhibition of the Peredvizhniki (Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions), the original inaugurated the Russian tradition of the lyrical 'mood landscape'. Executed in oil on plywood, this copy bears the name N. Makarov, about whom no further information has been established.
