This sheet belongs to the serigraphs after Chagall's "Jerusalem Windows," the cycle of twelve stained-glass windows for the synagogue of the Hadassah Medical Center near Jerusalem. Observing the prohibition on depicting the human figure in the synagogue, the artist builds the composition from colour and symbol – animals, fish, birds, plants and objects of Old Testament imagery bound to the twelve tribes of Israel. The saturated glow of colour that drew Chagall to stained glass is here rendered through the printmaking medium.
