Centaur belongs to one of the central motifs in the art of Ernst Neizvestny. In the figure of a creature half-man, half-horse the sculptor saw the union of human, animal and mechanical principles – a metaphor for the dual nature of man and the inner struggle of these forces. The centaur runs through his entire legacy: tellingly, the artist's first biography was titled Centaur. The piece is realized in the artist's characteristic expressive plasticity, with powerful, tense forms in which the figure seems to grow out of a dense, shapeless mass.
